Tanga City Council

Mainland Tanzania (Tanganyika) was under German colonial rule from 1884 to 1916 and British rule from 1917 to 1961. Tanganyika gained independence peacefully.

Tanga District is one of the districts established during the colonial period under the North Eastern Province whose headquarters was Tanga. After Independence in 1961, the Government developed an administrative system at the Central Government and Local Government levels, later changes were made to meet the needs of the national government. Initially, Tanga District included the Districts of Muheza, Mkinga and Tanga itself

Since 1961, Tanga District has had a Town Council which was upgraded to a Municipality in 1983 and to a City Council in 2005.

Geography and Borders

Tanga city is located at longitudes 38 ^o 53′ and 39 ^o 10′ east and latitudes 5 ^o and 5 ^o 16′ south of the equator. Tanga city is located in the North-East of Tanzania, bordering Muheza District Council to the West and South, Mkinga District Council to the North and the Indian Ocean to the East. Tanga is located 350 km north of Dar es Salaam and 250 km south of Mombasa.

Administration

Tanga District is led by a District Commissioner assisted by the Tanga District Administrative Secretary on the Central Government side. Leadership on the Local Government side is led by the Mayor and City Director, Executives and the Council of Councillors.

Tanga City Council has 1 Hon. Eligible Mayor, has a total of 37 Councillors of which 27 are elected and 10 are Permanent.

Tanga City is the headquarters of Tanga Region. Tanga City has a total of 4 Divisions, 27 Wards and 181 Streets. Tanga City is divided into urban and suburban areas, with a total of 16 wards in the city and 11 wards outside the city. The city has one electoral constituency, which is Tanga Constituency.
